The Jewish community of Armenia is getting prepared to celebrate the 2th anniversary of its foundation. In the frames of the celebration a book about the prominent Jews of Armenia is planned to be published. The editor of the Jewish community newspaper ‘Magen David” Adelina Livshits informed about this during the conversation with the correspondent of the News from Armenia-NEWS.am information-analytic agency.
“This book is about the Jews, who have contributed in the various strata of life in Armenia – science, culture and production”, - said Adelina Livshits, adding that among the Jewish community members there are lot of people known in Armenia and “we would not want their fates to end up in oblivion”.
Several years ago a book was released entitled “Jews of Armenia – the Middle Ages”, with more than one thousand five hundred copies. The book was published based on the documents of the symposium that was held in Yeghegnadzor. A medieval Jewish cemetery was found there and Jewish and Armenian scientists worked together to restore it. “Jews living now in Armenia are not the descendants of those Jews. Today’s Jews are the so-called “Ashkenazi Jews” who came here one way or another, some of the women got married and their descendants are also living here. I say women because most of the members of the Jewish community are women”, - said Livshits.
According to Adeline Livshits, the Government of Armenia and the Ministry of Culture are supporting the community in many projects: “They have contributed an amount for the edition of the book about the outstanding representatives of the community, but we want to supplement this amount with the help of a sponsor to be able to publish the book in a larger volume.
