Armenian Community of Israel mourns the death of the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem

Armenian Patriarch Torkom Archbishop Manoogian Torkom Patriarch was one of the greatest religious figures not only for the Armenians community in Israel but also for all Armenian people.

Death of the Armenian Patriarch Torkom Archbishop Manoogian shocked the whole Armenian community of Israel. The heart of the Pastor stopped beating on Thursday morning and doctors recorded his death after a long illness. Before he died, Torkom Patriarch was in “Hadasa-Ein Kerem” hospital of Holy Savior’s monastery, under the supervision of doctors.

Brotherhood Assembly was invited yesterday to arrange the funeral of the Patriarch.

Head of External and Interchurch Relations of Jerusalem Armenian Patriarchate Aris Archbishop Shirvanyan told radio “Liberty” that members of St. James Brotherhood will visit Jerusalem from various countries and that Brotherhood Assembly will be held on October 19 to choose a Vicar General. The main duty of the Vicar General is to arrange the elections of the new Patriarch.

According to the decision made during the Brotherhood Assembly, the last unction of Torkom Patriarch and then ecclesiastical order and the funeral will take place on October 22, preceding several ceremonies.

According to Aris Archbishop Shirvanyan, Patriarch will be buried next to other Patriarchs at Holy Savior’s cemetery located at the Armenian quarter.

Two years ago, the Catholicos of all Armenians, in accordance with the decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia, awarded the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem Torkom Archbishop Manoogian with “St. Mesrop Mashtots” supreme order for 20 years of reign, 70 years of priesthood and 91st anniversary of his birthday.

The Patriarch had introduced a letter asking to appoint new elections because of his bad health condition during the General Assembly of the Brotherhood that took place in Jerusalem on November 2010. Nurhan Archbishop Manoogian was carrying out the responsibilities of the Patriarch during his illness and despite statutory changes, the elections of a new patriarch wer postponed.

Latest Torkom Patriarch was one of the greatest religious figures not only for the Armenians community in Israel but also for all Armenian people, intellectual person and an author of more than 20 monographs, among them three collections of poetry and several books devoted to the Armenian Genocide. He was a famous researcher of Komitas and author of a detailed guidebook about the Holy Places of Jerusalem.
