Is it possible that the Knesset is about to recognize the Armenian holocaust?

The Knesset Plenum gathered today (Tuesday 12.6.12) for a special discussion on the issue of the Armenian genocide. Knesset Chairman, Reuven (Rubi) Rivlin said that it is about time that the Jewish people will recognize other people's tragedy.

In his statements at the beginning of the hearing, Rivlin explained that the Jewish people can not ignore such a tragedy like that because it actually became “our turn” after the Armenian’s.
Chairman also clarified that " This is not an accusation and defiance towards the current Turkish government, but we must make our voices heard when other peoples are in danger of extermination", said Rivlin.

“The ones that thought and expressed The Final Solution for the Jews were impressed by the idea that the world would keep silent and never say anything, like it did at the Armenian genocide and after it. It is inconceivable that the Knesset will ignore this”, added Rivlin. These words were said on a discussion proposing an agenda that will indicate the anniversary of the Armenian genocide.

One of the initiators of the proposal, Knesset Member Arie Eldad (from “Ehood Leumi” party), said that Turkey must recognize its responsibility for the historic crime. “When you read testimonies of the Armenian genocide it seems that this is like a general rehearsal for what was done to us 25 years later”, said Eldad and stressed that the debate is not suggested enough because of the tense relations with Turkey.

Meretz party chairman, Zehava Gal – On, that was also initiator along with Eldad to this debate suggestion, said that this genocide was “swept under – rug” for too many years due to the country’s foreign relations policies. Gal – On said that the timing for this debate might be problematic because our actual relations with Turkey. “We should end our crisis with Turkey and Israel is strong enough to make an apology for the killing of citizens. It’s not a matter of recognizing the genocide or apologizing, it’s both, said Gal – On.

Knesset Member Gal – On also stressed that this is not in defiance of the Turks. “It is our primary moral obligation as the Jewish people to reveal sensitivity towards other’s misfortune”, said Gal – On during her speech. KM Dov Hanin (from Hadash party) also spoke and even mentioned a quote from Hitler that said “who remembers the Armenians now…” in response to a question whether he does not fear the world’s reaction about the Jewish extermination theme.
