Norwegian modulation: from humanism to Holocaust

I was trying not to follow the news during the holiday. And I heard about the Norwegian slaughter a bit late. Andres Breivik seemed to be a perfect embodiment of evil, whose 'personal revolution' caused the death of 70 people, including many young people in the camp of Utoya Island. Then I came across a debate about the interpretation of these events in the Armenian media.

In particular, a number of Armenian print and electronic media along with the terrible crime of Breivik, were actively discussing the Armeinan theme and the episodes about the Genocide that had appeared in his manifesto entitled '2083: A European Declaration of Independence'. The attention was definitely exaggerated. Breivik critisizes multicultural society and introduces a program, according to which all non-Europeans should be expelled from the territory of Europe and the development of Islam suppressed.
The fanaticos inspired by anti-islamic ideas, while describing the history of islam-christianity civilization struggle in his 1015 paged 'work', could not avoid mentioning about the Armenian Genocide and it is quite natural that he should consider the Armenians as pioneers in the front of this 'struggle'. This is based not on the fact that Breivik was very much fond of Armenians but on the logic of his delusion.
Besides this history has stored one more episode when another Norwegian villain had appeared in the pages of the Armenian history.
The famous Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen, years after the Armenian Genocide was elected as a new Chairman of the Committee for Refugees of the newly founded League of Nations and had a special attitude toward the Armenian people. He has consistently fought to include the Republic of Armenia in this organization, thousands of Armenians were granted refugee passports thanks to him and finally, as a result of his efforts, a commission was founded in the League of Nations which visited Soviet Armenia in 1925 to examine the transmigration issue of the Armenian refugees in their homeland. The members of the delegation were French J. Carle, British Ch. Dupuis, and Italian P. Lo. Savio; Nansen personally headed the commission.

Members for the delegation were invited by the initiative of Nansen and Captain Vidkun Quisling became the secretary of the delegation. Nansen had a warm treatment towards this young person who had already proved his professionalism. Vidkun was leading Nansen's organization of supporting people starving in Russia and Ukraine in 1921 and had shown his best possibilities and abilities in this work, significantly improving the fate of these sufferers. Nansen was trying to use his experience also in Armenia. Quisling arrived to Armenia with Nansen and tried to create conditions for the transmigration of several thousand Armenian refugees from the Balkans. The delegation, for which Quisling was also an interpreter, visited all the regions of the country trying to solve the issues connected with the water supply and the expansion of the cultivated lands but without results. Even when Nansen left to Europe, he authorized Quisling to meet and negotiate with the representatives of Transcaucasia Republics in Yerevan and Moscow to find resources for irrigation and the transmigration of the refugees. The letters of Nansen show how much the Norwegian humanist trusted Quisling. In 1929 the transmigration project completely failed and a year later died also Nansen.
Quisling returned to Norway. Only 10 years later the idealist devoted to the project of helping the Armenians, becomes the leader of the Norwegian fascists, heading the pro-Nazi government. From October 1942 till February 1943 by the personal initiative of Quisling and even without the command of Germany, were carried out mass arrests of the Jewish population of Norway and their deportations to the extermination camps. In May 8, 1945 after the collapse of fascism, Quisling was arrested and executed in October.
The friend of the Armenian people became a global evil. Amazing transformation.
