German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for maintaining public order in Iran and preventing possible uncontrolled migration flows from the Islamic Republic.
Merz emphasized that basic supplies for the population must be maintained in Iran. “We also want to prevent uncontrolled migration flows from Iran,” he said during a visit to a crafts fair in Munich, DPA reports.
The German Chancellor added that it is still difficult to judge exactly what form they might take. “We do not want to experience a Syrian scenario,” he stated. Millions of people fled Syria due to the years-long civil war, many of them to Europe and particularly to Germany.
At the peak of the migration crisis in 2015, around 1 million refugees arrived in Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel at the time stated that asylum should be granted to all those legally entitled to it, regardless of their numbers. Germany ultimately found itself stretched to its limits — at one point, there was nowhere to house refugees, with abandoned schools and factories converted into shelters. A number of German politicians and experts criticized this migration policy.
