Cyprus and Armenia share same values and have been fighting for same rights for years: Annita Demetriou

קפריסין וארמניה חולקות את אותם ערכים ונאבקות במשך שנים על אותן זכויות: אניטה דמטריו

President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus Annita Demetriou, speaking in Yerevan at a joint press conference with Armenian Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan, lauded the high-level friendly ties between the two countries and expressed readiness to further deepen the relationship.

“Our meeting today is yet another testament to the excellent relationship between our two countries, and it couldn’t be otherwise because Armenia is in our hearts,” Demetriou said.

She spoke about the “impressive and moving” moments she saw during her recent trip to Aragatsotn province, where she met forcibly displaced persons of Nagorno-Karabakh who have been living there since 2023.

“We share the same values, the same principles, and we’ve been struggling for the same justice for many years. During the trip we saw people who are trying to build their life anew. We are ready, from our side, to support that path of rebuilding,” Demetriou said.

Demetriou also lauded the Armenia-Cyprus-Greece trilateral cooperation format, noting that it must continue to deepen.

She underscored the need for equal and unbiased approach by international bodies.

“Europe and international bodies must not be guided by double standards. We must not forget what happened in Armenia. We must have a clear reaction based on justice,” she said.

During the meeting the parties also discussed concerns around regional security and conflicts.
