Even after ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia extended hand of peace to Azerbaijan: Ambassador Balayan

On April 2, the Committee on External Relations of the Belgian House of Representatives held hearings on the resolution “Establishing Peace in the South Caucasus.” The meeting was chaired by the Chair of the Committee, Els Van Hoof.

At the invitation of the Chair of the Committee, Ambassador Tigran Balayan delivered a speech at the meeting on Armenia’s efforts to establish peace in the South Caucasus.

In his speech, the Armenian Ambassador expressed gratitude to the Belgian Parliament for its consistent attention to issues important to Armenia, highlighting Armenia’s inclusion in the memorandum on the formation of the Belgian government. In this context, Tigran Balayan emphasized the importance of deepening Armenian-Belgian cooperation, facilitated by the presence and active engagement of the Belgian Embassy in Yerevan.

At the parliamentary hearings, Ambassador Balayan noted that even after the ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia extended a hand of peace to Azerbaijan, proposing to turn the page on hostility and establish civilized relations by signing a peace agreement. Such an agreement, he emphasized, would enable cooperation for the sake of a stable and prosperous future for the region. He also stressed the importance of the international community’s consistent efforts to prevent escalation and support Armenia’s constructive initiatives.

In response to questions from the deputies, Ambassador Balayan provided a comprehensive overview of the Armenia-EU partnership, the Crossroads of Peace project, and efforts to diversify the economy of Armenia.
