Secretary General Davit Karapetyan Participated in the 'Raisina Mediterranean' Conference

On June 13, in Marseille, on the sidelines of the “Raisina Mediterranean”, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Davit Karapetyan participated and delivered remarks at the roundtable discussion entitled “Calm Amidst the Currents: Tackling Conflicts and Crises”.

In his remarks, the Secretary General emphasized the critical importance of maritime security for global trade, peace, and environmental sustainability. He highlighted the continued threats to maritime regions, including piracy, trafficking, organized crime, and increasing geopolitical tensions, which undermine international stability.

He stressed the need for full compliance with international law, particularly the UN Charter and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, as a foundation for ensuring sovereignty, freedom of navigation, and peaceful dispute resolution. He also underscored the importance of addressing the root causes of maritime insecurity through development-focused and inclusive approaches.

Davit Karapetyan noted that despite being a landlocked country, Armenia actively contributes to global environmental efforts. Recently, Armenia signed the Agreement on Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) during the Third UN Ocean Conference in Nice. The country is also preparing to host the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) in 2026, which will include a strong focus on ocean biodiversity.

The Secretary General reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and to protecting the oceans for future generations.
