Trump imposes record $600 billion in tariffs on China

Trump imposes record 0 billion in tariffs on China

US President Donald Trump announced that he had imposed import tariffs on China worth a total of $600 billion. This is more than any other US leader did.

“I have imposed significant tariffs on China, amounting to $600 billion. No other president has gone that far“, Trump told reporters.

A few days earlier, China’s Ministry of Commerce said that Washington’s actions were “a typical display of unilateralism and protectionism“. The agency called on US authorities to return to the right track of the multilateral trading system.

The Asia Times previously reported that Trump’s actions were doing China more good than harm. According to the authors of the article, the closure of USAID leaves China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative without competition, which will allow Beijing to expand its infrastructure development strategy.

In January, Trump announced new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China. Tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada will be 25 percent, and on goods from China – 10 percent.
