US concerned about Israeli strikes on Iranian oil depots: NYT

Israeli strikes on oil depots in the Tehran region came as a surprise to the US in their scale and caused divisions among allies, the New York Times reported.

According to sources in the news agency, the Israel Defense Forces informed the US military about the strikes before they took place, but a US official said the United States was surprised by the scale of the attacks.

“We don’t think it was a good idea,” a senior US official said.

It is noted that the US is concerned that Israeli strikes on infrastructure serving ordinary Iranians could have strategic consequences, uniting Iranian society and raising oil prices.

Earlier, the Iranian side reported that the US and Israel had struck four oil depots and another energy infrastructure facility in and around Tehran on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has denied any involvement of US military personnel in the attacks.

“These were Israeli strikes,” he told CNN. According to Wright, the US is not currently planning to strike Iran’s energy infrastructure.
