The approaches of Russia and Iran to the opening of transport communications in the region are similar. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova during a briefing, referring to the statement of the Iranian Ambassador to Armenia that only Tehran shares Yerevan’s approach to the opening of communications.
“This was confirmed in the Agreement on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed by the leaders of the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran in Moscow on January 17. It states that the parties contribute to security measures in adjacent regions, including the South Caucasus, cooperate to prevent destabilizing interference by third parties,” the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman said.
According to Zakharova, the only difference is that Russia is part of the trilateral working group on the issue of unblocking transport communications. She noted that the group has done a lot of work in this direction, including in developing the fundamental principle of unblocking, which is the preservation of the sovereignty and jurisdiction of states over the passage of goods through their territory.
According to Zakharova, this condition was agreed to both in Baku and Yerevan. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that “the group’s work was frozen due to Armenia’s position.”
