At the UNGA81 6th Committee meeting under agenda item “Status of the Protocols Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and Relating to the Protection of Victims of Armed Conflicts.” the delegation of Armenia reaffirmed Armenia’s steadfast commitment to international humanitarian law, emphasizing the universal application and effective implementation of the IHL. The statement underscored the importance of protecting all persons affected by armed conflict, with particular emphasis on the rights of persons deprived of their liberty.
Armenia stressed that all detainees must be treated humanely and with respect for their dignity, and that applicable legal safeguards, including those concerning release and repatriation, must be fully respected. Addressing the continued detention of 19 Armenians, as well as the fate and whereabouts of missing persons and cases of enforced disappearance, the delegation of Armenia highlighted the urgent need to address outstanding humanitarian issues in accordance with international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
Concrete measures at the national level to strengthen the implementation of international humanitarian law have also been highlighted. These include the integration of IHL into the training of armed forces and relevant state institutions, specialized training for military and diplomatic personnel in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the adoption of a dedicated Law on Persons Missing in Circumstances Resulting from Military Operations.
