We are encouraged by Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization process: Kaja Kallas

The European Union strongly supports the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan based on the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of borders, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas during a joint press conference with Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in Yerevan.

“There is no alternative to these principles,” Kallas emphasized.

She welcomed the progress made in the bilateral normalization process, stating that a resolution between Armenia and Azerbaijan could pave the way for lasting peace in the region.

In response to a question about how important the signing of a peace treaty is for the EU and how it was addressed during her recent visit to Baku, Kallas noted that various options for dialogue were discussed during the visit.

“There is no doubt—we are encouraged by the normalization process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. We would like to see this process concluded as soon as possible,” she said.

“We need greater stability not only in this region but across the world,” Kallas added.

She also underlined the importance of a timely resolution in the context of Europe’s broader efforts to strengthen connectivity with Central Asia.
